In the early days of Jefferson County, the area we now call Festus was known as Tanglefoot. Springing up on the outskirts of Crystal City (a dry company town), Tanglefoot became the destination of choice after a long day in the mills and factories of Crystal City. Naturally, several saloons or “Dram shops” popped up in the Tanglefoot area to meet the needs and desires of the hardworking company men. Many a man would stumble home after a long night and maybe a few too many drinks, getting his feet tangled in the brush. A shopkeeper who looked on is said to have commented, “It looks like they have tangled feet!” and the name Tanglefoot was born.
Years later when incorporation was being considered, the town’s elders sought a more proper and dignified name. Legend says the name Festus was chosen at a church ceremony where a Bible was opened blindly and the first proper name encountered was that of Portcius Festus, the governor of Judea around 60 AD.
Fast forward to today where we would like to welcome you to our version of Tanglefoot. Created as a place to come after a hard day at the mill or the office where you can unwind and relax with friends and family. Located where the legendary Dohacks once stood, Tanglefoot Steakhouse strives to be one of Jefferson County’s best dining establishments! Locally owned and operated, Tanglefoot Steakhouse is best known as the place for the areas finest cuts of beef and the best in local beers and wines. Tanglefoot; however is far more than a steakhouse!
